Letter to Desmund Tutu
Your Grace,
As an alumvious of Hull University where you consolidate your interest in Human Rights through the Wilberforce Institute,
As a Anglican who has, for a long time, admired that saintly man, Bishop Trevor Huddleston,
As past Chairman of Amnesty International Mauritius Section (AIMS), I humbly turn to you to help us in relieving the harsh conditions some South African national experience in our jails. We have already discussed the problem orally with the South African High Commissioner in Port-Louis who seems to remain insensitive. Our Director, Lindley Couronne, has written to H.E Mr Nelson Mandela to explain the need for the urgent establishment of an extradition protocol between our two countries and to seek his help in pressuring our Government to initiate discussions.
Your enlightened belief in human dignity and rights is known the world over: may I, therefore, make an appeal to you, with your moral fortitude, to help us in alleviating the massive stress under which some of your nationals live in our prisons.
